New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

NEW WAY TWIN IGNITION - OPERATION MODES

OVERVIEW
New Way Horizontal twin cylinder engines were outfitted in essence with two variants in their ignition systems. Both buzz coil and H.V. magneto were used.
The engines were Boxer engines ie Horizontal and 180 degree apart. Ie when one piston is on the compression stroke the other piston is on the exhaust stroke. It is this fact that allowed a single spark coil configuration of Buzz coil to be used on a twin cylinder engine.
When LV dynamos were used for power this necessitated use of different spark coils to that required when powered just by cells (batteries).

Note:- Further detail is available in the Library in the 7HP Twin Cylinder Instructions (especially NOTE page 7)

MODES

  1. HV MAGNETO
    1. Uses standard methods of timing for combustion engines
    2. Magneto timed for 180 degree.
  2. SINGLE BUZZ COIL (1st drawing)
    1. Possible because timing is exactly 180 degree apart.
    2. Buzz coil MUST have 2 separate HV coil connections. (both fully isolated) (ie a 4 terminal coil box - 2 primary and 2 secondary)
      1. NOTE:- Very Common 3 terminal Buzz Coils with one HV lead internally commoned to the LV side of the buzz coil will not work.
    3. The 2 Spark plugs connect in series to either side of the HV Buzz Coil output.
      1. Ie every time the Buzz coil is timed to spark, both spark plugs will fire in series
        1. One spark is wasted as the cylinder will be about to commence intake suction.
        2. Important that plug gap is not wide as the effective gap is 2x the single plug.
    4. New Way's use of the unique Speed Control lever sets spark timing with specific connection to account for double sparking to both cylinders.
      1. Motor connections are totally different to when the double coil is used (refer Diagrams)
    5. Means the buzz coil is powered every 2nd stroke instead of every 4th stroke
  3. DOUBLE BUZZ COIL (2nd Drawing)
    1. Uses CAM timing associated with push rod actuated contacts to direct power to the correct coil, for timed spark to the correct cylinder.
      1. Coil 1 - Cylinder 1
      2. Coil 2 - Cylinder 2
      3. Refer 2nd Diagram showing 2 coils  mounted within 1 coil box.
    2. Speed control lever alters timing for start /run
    3. Ignition is in essence a duplicated single cylinder ignition system with a manual advance control.

So if you want to set up your New Way Twin with a single coil Buzz coil the key point is to make sure that it is a 4 terminal not a 3 terminal Buzz box.
For example T Ford and KW Bus coils can be 3 terminal boxes. Even New Way supplied both 3 and 4 terminal units, since 3 terminal is all that is required on a single cylinder engine.

For general interest:-
Here in Fig 4 is the configuration for a single cylinder engine ignition system. Note, in this case a 4 terminal Buzz coil has been used with one side of the LV and HV commoned externally. (2 terminals around top left hand corner of spark coil box)

Had this coil been used on a twin, the common of course would be disconnected and the other spark plug connected to that HV terminal and also changed to incorporate  connection via the speed control lever. (compare 1st drawing)

New Drawings in the New Way Library

NEW WAY LIBRARY EXPANSION.
Several new  DRAWING documents have recently been added to the library thanks in a large part to Neil H. of Victoria Australia. These I am sure will be greatly appreciated where enthusiasts find them selves with an engine just a little shy on some original parts.

AVAILABLE DRAWINGS

  1. IGNITION ADVANCE CONTROL - A concept drawing showing the principle of operation that New Way used on their Twin Cylinder engines.
    1. Essentially the control lever enabled the operator to vary the spark advance manually from an operationally retarded status at start to an advanced spark when running.
    2. Achieved by having a variable gap contact that fed the BUZZ coil. Manually changing the gap with the lever, which was connected to the push rod altered the time when the circuit was completed. In other words the circuit timed the power to the buzz coil depending on what was selected on advance control lever.
  2. VALVE CAGE DRAWING -
    1. Drawing suits the New Way Standard Series Vertical - Model AC
  3. MIXER SETUP DRAWING -
    1. Drawing suits the New Way Standard Series Vertical - Model AC
  4. BUTTERFLY CONTROL DRAWING -
    1. Drawing suits the New Way Standard Series Vertical - Model AC
  5. KEROSENE FUEL PUMP DRAWING -
    1. Drawing suits the Series M Kerosene engine in particular the 4 H.P. model
  6. SMALL FAN DRAWING
    1. Drawing suits the 1.5 H.P. New Way Jewel engine in particular. Suitability for other small Jewel not confirmed but it may also be suitable for up to the 2.5 H.P. horizontal Jewel models.
  7. COMPANY BUZZ COIL DRAWING -
    1. Company drawing for the New Way Buzz Coil manufactured by National Coil Company.
  8. SHROUD DRAWINGS -
    1. Drawing suiting the New Way Standard Series Vertical 3.5 H.P. - Model AC
    2. Drawing suiting the New Way Standard Series Vertical 4.5 H.P. - Model EC

GENEROSITY
Thanks so much for all those who have contributed both here and in the past either with detailed drawings or of their precious original documents. By this generosity the scope and detail that we can provide is continually being upgraded to make the enthusiast both better informed and a times saving considerable time as some works being undertaken by New Way enthusiasts don't have to be done from the "Get Go". Drawings are a great practical example of this in action.

A quick look at the library and you will soon realize there are now 106 New Way related documents available for free download.

Recent additions include some excellent quality Brochures. All new documents added are now notated in the far right column indicating the month they were added to the library so you as the user don't have to search if you are just looking for updates.

Marco Light and Power Plant - New Way Engine Powered

NEW WAY ENGINES
New Way Air Cooled Engines were utilized by several companies to provide power to drive their proprietary machines.
The Marmon Chicago Company Inc. was one such company. In the brochure just added to the library, Marmon used the New Way "F Series" hinged 4 HP. model engine to drive their Marco Light and Power Plant.

Later Marmon plants used the New Way "CH" model engines.

LIBRARY UPDATE
The Marmon Chicago Company Inc. large format folded brochure for their "Marco Light and Power Plant" has just been added to the New Way library

  • The document is an excellent testimony to the claims of reliability of the products represented backed up and supported by "Uncle Sam's" demand and use in military application in the US and France in WWI.
  • Multiple illustrations show details of the plant and engines to ensure the purchaser was aware that "Quality of Plant" was the genuine goal.
DOCUMENT FORMAT

  • Original intentions were to provide this in a multiple A4 page modified format for easy printing on a home printer. That proved not practical and the original large folded format has been retained with very high resolution for printing.
  • Printing on a good resolution A4 printer is still possible because of the quality of the document but of course the print will be very small.
    • Printing to any format, either A4, A3, A2 or A1 should be done with the printer set to "Fit to page" so the print is expanded to maximum size for the format you choose.
    • Print the document "double sided" on "short side"
  • Once printed,
    • Fold long side in half, with the address field outward
    • Fold again mid between borders near address field.
    • Finally fold again so address field forms the front and the back is the smallest bordered area headed with the statement "The War Developed and Perfected
    • Trim the folded document edges to suit.
    • Enjoy!!
POWERED BY NEW WAY [Proprietary Outfits?]
New Way Motor Company established themselves with criteria that both set them apart but also established them in the market place. Part of this was a natural outcome of the design inherent in their engines.

  1. Simplicity and Reliability of design - Promotion "Goes and Goes Right"
  2. Progressive - Practiced an advancing development philosophy with up to minute technology - eg HT Magnetos, throttle governors
  3. Air Cooling provided weight and maneuverability advantages - Excellent portability achieved especially for applications such as Binders and multi-function farm use.
    1. Large and heavy water cooling tanks weren't required.
    2. Promoted in Marmon's application with their "Marco Light and Power Plant"
New Way Engines were utilised in :-

LIBRARY UPDATE

Manufacturing Company Brochures
We have recently procured 2 brochures from company's that utilized New Way power plants to drive their equipment. The library is slowly growing with 94 documents now available for free download.

THIRD PARTY MACHINERY - POWERED BY NEW WAY

  • MARCO LIGHTING PLANTS
  • HAYS PUMPING PLANTS
New Way Motor Company engines are extolled for their virtues leaving the reader in no doubt as to the high standard of equipment represented in the brochure material.

DOCUMENTS
Added today (August 1st 2018) is the brochure HAYS PUMPING PLANTS, Direct Driven, by David S. Hays of New York USA. An 8 page document illustrating the "Direct Driven" pumping plant combinations with a range of New Way Engines. {if printing - double sided - long edge}

New Way ENGINES illustrated include excellent plates showing:
  • Horizontal Jewel Engines
  • Vertical Standard engines including both the non-hinged 2.5 Hp engine and hinged crankcase versions.
  • Early Horizontal Standard Twin engine of 8 Hp. (Hit Miss) [later engines of this size were Throttle Governed]
The MARCO LIGHTING PLANTS document in its original "A1" format is a double sided folded document. We are in the process of re-configuring the document into an A4 format to allow it to be readily printed. The intention is to leave all information intact as represented so the essence of the document remains intact.
  • We hope to have this document available in the near future.
We are always looking for documents to add to the library. (Click) Please feel free to contact us if you feel you have a document not already represented in the library.
One document we still desperately seek is the Engine Instruction Manual that includes the Horizontal Double Cylinder 8 and 12 HP Throttle Governed engines.

Read and Enjoy the day.

New Way Machinery - LIBRARY NEWS

New Way Motor Company Documentation

LIBRARY GROWTH
Recently we have added another 3 documents to the library. These are all in excellent condition and cover various aspects of the "New Way Motor Company" range of engines and their application. It brings the total available for download to 90.

Obviously the library continues to grow, but the throttle governed instruction for the 8 and 12 Hp twins continues to evade us. We trust that one day we will be able to make it available in watermarked version to enthusiasts.

COMPANY OPERATIONS RECORDS
On the matter of documentation we have recently contacted the Michigan Libraries in the hope they had received updated material on the company operations etc. Often this occurs when estate material is bequeathed to public institutions. Unfortunately " New Way" company records are very scarce with nothing further available.
We would love to find some more exhaustive actual company records especially related to the specifics of their factories and plant development.

ADDED

  1. Bulletin No12
    1. A Brochure Covering the New Way roller bearing engines (BH, EH, GH) in the H.P. range of 3 to 10.
  2. Catalog C-24
    1. A well illustrated document showing photographs of the New Way engines fitted as standard to various manufacturers equipment types.
    2. Limited to New Way Motor Company "Five engines in One" classification. (Model CH)
  3. Testimonial (F.L. 9)
    1. Part of the "Did it ever occur to You" series of documents
    2. An official Farmers Promotional booklet espousing the traits, reliability and ease of use of New Way engines, even for the females on the land.
